3 Things That Can Cause You To Have Neck Pain

by Chloe Dean

If you are suffering with neck pain, it can disrupt your life. Below are some things that can cause you to have this pain so you know what changes you need to make in your life.

Take Care of Stress

When you feel stress in your body, this often leads to tension headaches. This type of headache causes the muscles to become tense in your neck, as well as contracted muscles around and in your head. To reduce stress in your life, one thing you can try is some relaxation techniques.

Make Sure You Don't Have TMJ

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a problem that affects your joints and chewing muscles that connect your lower jaw to your skull. When you have this problem, it can cause many symptoms, including pain in your neck.  Besides neck pain, you may have pain when you chew, hear a popping or clicking sound when you open and close your mouth, have headaches, and have jaw pain.

If you have any of these symptoms, you should see your dentist, who can determine if you have this disorder.  The dentist will check to see if you have a bad bite alignment, and, if so, refer you to an orthodontist for treatment, such as braces. A doctor may also do an MRI on your jaw, or take x-rays to determine if you have TMJ.

Check Your Posture

If you stand or lie in an awkward position for a long period, such as sleeping without adequate neck and head support, and balancing your phone between your shoulder and your ear, you may have neck pain. This is because poor posture puts more strain on the muscles in your shoulder and neck.

If you are a back sleeper, purchase a thinner pillow to keep your head back instead of thrown forward. If you are a side sleeper, purchase a firm pillow that will fill in the space between your outside shoulder and ear.

If you sleep on your stomach, purchase a thin pillow, as you do not need very much, if any, neck support.

If you continue to have neck pain, see a chiropractor for help. They have many treatments they can do to help, such as making some neck adjustments, which is called cervical manipulation, to loosen up the neck joints. The chiropractor will likely use his or her hands to twist your neck sharply to snap your neck vertebrae back into alignment. For more information, contact a business such as Healing Center The.
