Alternative Treatment Options For Endometriosis

by Chloe Dean

Are you struggling to find relief from the symptoms of endometriosis? If conventional treatment has fallen short, consider adding an alternative treatment method to your regime.

Acupuncture

The body is flowing with natural energy-- at least, that's what acupuncturists believe. Rooted in ancient Chinese tradition, acupuncture stems from the idea that qi, or energy, makes its way through the body on meridians. If those meridians become blocked, qi is unable to flow evenly. The end result is pain and illness.

Acupuncture is unique in that it has stood the test of time. Many modern studies indicate that acupuncture is an effective treatment for a variety of conditions. One study took a look at endometriosis and acupuncture specifically and found that patients with severe cases of endometriosis experienced a significant reduction in pain after acupuncture treatment. Although more research is needed, acupuncture is worth considering for those suffering from endometriosis.

Lifestyle changes

There is some indication that adopting a healthy lifestyle may be beneficial for those with endometriosis. Those eating a high fat diet tend to have higher estrogen levels. Higher estrogen levels can increase the risk of developing endometriosis. It's also possible that having higher levels of estrogen could exacerbate symptoms of the disease.

A good rule of thumb is to try and eat a diet high in fiber and lean protein, and low in saturated fat. This means lots of fruits, veggies, chicken, and beans, while cutting down on beef, high fat dairy, and processed foods. Additionally, exercise may cut down on estrogen levels, so hitting the gym may be helpful, as well.

Dietary supplements

There are a variety of dietary supplements available that may help reduce the symptoms of endometriosis. Omega 3 fatty acids can cut down on inflammation associated with the disease. Calcium may reduce estrogen levels in the body. Probiotics may help with the digestive issues that endometriosis can cause.

Massage

Massage may be another possible treatment option for those with endometriosis. One study looked at women with confirmed cases of the disease. Those receiving massage therapy to the abdomen and pelvic area noticed a significant decrease in endometriosis pain. Although more research is necessary, massage is a relatively risk-free option for those suffering from the condition.

If you've been struggling to get your endometriosis under control, talk to your doctor to see if acupuncture, massage, lifestyle changes, or dietary supplements may be right for you.
